Graduating

In order to be admitted to graduation, every student must have fulfilled all requirements of the Master programme.

Examination

The faculty expects the highest scholarly effort and achievement from students. Individual courses are examined orally and/or in the form of written assessments. Timely completion of degree requirements is expected. Students who complete the one year programme MA in Religious Studies receive a Master of Arts diploma in Religious Studies of Leiden University. Students who complete the two year MPhil programma receive a Master of Philosophy in Religious Studies diploma. The requirements of the programme are met when all courses have been passed successfully and the Master's thesis has been approved.

Thesis procedure

Students should take into account that supervisors may take up to four weeks to make an assessment of the final version of the thesis and that supervisors are not available for consultation and assessment through July-August.
For the procedure of writing your thesis, also see the section Thesis Instruction.

Graduation

There are two possibilities to receive your master diploma:

  1. The first possibility is to receive your diploma during a communal graduation ceremony. This ceremony will take place on fixed dates (see below), and will last about one hour. For dates please check Examination Committee.
  2. The second possibility is not to participate in a ceremony, but to have your diploma sent to your private address. In this case there is no deadline for submission. Please note that the preparation of the diploma will take about 4 – 6 weeks.

Requirements

  • Grades: In order to be admitted to graduation, every student must have fulfilled all requirements of the master programme. This means that all grades, of the courses as well as of the thesis, must be known and registered at the secretariat before the above mentioned deadlines. When all grades are in, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the academic advisor, mrs dr. E.P. den Boer (e.p.den.boer@religion.leidenuniv.nl)
  • Thesis: The secretariat needs three copies of the final version of the thesis, one for both supervisors and one for the faculty archive.
  • Finances: All financial requirements with the International Office must be fulfilled.

Upcoming Graduation Ceremonies

Be aware that, in case you do not complete all requirements of the study programme before August 31, you have to re-register and pay for the new academic year which starts on September 1.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact dr. E.P. den Boer (e.p.den.boer@religion.leidenuniv.nl). You can visit her during opening hours (Tuesday - Friday from 9.00am - 17.00 pm).

Cum Laude

The examination board of the Institute has decided to compute the average grade for the Master programmes by weighing the marks of each component by the corresponding number of ECTS (exemptions are excluded from the computation). The qualification “cum laude” will be awarded when the average of the marks is 8.5 or higher.
