Dr. Willem Hofstee is assistant professor of Religious Studies and teaches bachelor and master courses in Anthropology of Religion, Comparative Religion, and New Religious Movements and New Age. His research and publications concern the history of the academic study of religion in the 20th century, method and theory in the study of religion, and new religious movements and New Age groups in Europe. He is particularly interested in the relation between religious ideas and political actions.

Willem Hofstee studied Modern History, Cultural Anthropology, and History of Religions in Groningen, and obtained his PhD under the guidance of Hans G. Kippenberg and Jan N. Bremmer from the University of Groningen in 1997 with a critical analysis of Gerardus van der Leeuw’s phenomenology of religion. He has conducted fieldwork in Italy, Japan and Brazil, and has been teaching in turn at the universities of Groningen, Amsterdam (UvA), Sao Paulo (USP) and Nijmegen. He has been appointed in Leiden in 2004, and has been a member of the teaching staff of the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of Groningen from 1999 till 2006.
