Markus Davidsen is PhD researcher and teaching assistant in the sociology of religion. He teaches bachelor and master courses in the sociology of religion and in new religious movements and new age, and supervises bachelor and master theses within these areas. His research and publications concern the use of popular fiction in contemporary alternative spirituality, method and theory in the study of new religions, and religious education. He is particularly interested in contemporary, non-institutional religion, both in its internal structure and dynamics, in its relation to sociohistorical processes such as subjectivisation and mediatisation, and in the methodological and theoretical challenges it poses to the sociological and anthropological study of religion.

Markus Davidsen studied Religion at the University of Aarhus, Denmark and visited the University of Heidelberg, Germany as an exchange student. For demonstrating the added value of this exchange for his master’s thesis, he was awarded the Arenberg-Coimbra Group Prize for Erasmus Students in 2009. Since January 2009, Davidsen has been working on a PhD project under supervision of Prof.Dr. Meerten B. ter Borg at Leiden Institute for Religious Studies, where he has been appointed teaching assistant in the sociology of religion per August 2011. Davidsen is a board member of the Dutch Association for the Study of Religion (NGG), the Dutch national member organisation of the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR).
