
Leiden American Lecture Series

- On average, every other year, the American Studies program at Leiden University organizes a lecture series on an American Studies topic. This prestigious series consist of thirteen weekly lectures by leading scholars and other experts from the U.S. and Europe.
Since the series' inception in 1987, we have organized twelve lecture series dealing with the following themes and subjects: The American Constitution, The Black Experience in the U.S., Chicago, Encounters with the New World (1492-1992), the Vietnam War, the American presidency, the African American Century, Democracy in America, The African Diaspora: Black Cultures in the Americas, and The Making of American Presidents. In the spring of 2007, the theme was “The Civil Rights Movement: Fifty Years After.” The next lecture series is scheduled for Spring 2011.
Students can take the lecture series for course credit (10 ects). Auditors are welcome too. The Leiden American Studies series have an outstanding record of bringing internationally renowned scholars and other guest speakers to Leiden and are unique in the Netherlands and even in the rest of Europe.
