Start of the study: FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the start of your study year.

Does the department have an introductory programme?

On Thursday, 1 September 2011, during the introductionary programme of the Faculty of Humanities, you will visit the Philosophy department. You will meet the student advisor, who will introduce you to the programme and several practical issues. Further, arrangements will be made for a meeting with your tutor and for an introductionay tour in the University Library and its philosophy reading room.

Where and when is my first lecture?

Lectures will start from Monday, September 5th. The precise date and time of your first class depends on the courses you decide to include in your MA programme. Venues are located in, or in the direct surroundings of the Institute for Philosophy (Matthias de Vrieshof 4).

How do I get hold of my prospectus and lecture timetable?

The prospectus for the masters’s programme is available in the e-Prospectus. The timetables and academic calendar for the master's programmes in Philosophy are available on the website of the Institute for Philosophy.

Is there anything more I need to complete my enrolment?

No, further registration at the institute is not required.

How do I register for courses and seminars?

After you have discussed the components of your individual master's programme with your tutor, you are expected to register for the courses on uSis.

Where can I buy my study books and teaching material?

Study books that are indicated as required reading for your courses will be available at a bookshop in the city centre of Leiden. Generally, additional readings will be made available on Blackboard or as a master copy at the secretary’s office.

How can I catch up with any shortfall in my previous studies?

Students who are admitted to one of the master's programmes in Philosophy are generally expected to be able to follow the programme without taking additional courses. Students being admitted conditionally will be informed about the possibilities to catch up with their deficiencies before their arrival in Leiden.

Does my study association organize any opportunity to get to know other students?

The Institute for Philosophy has a study assocation called Symposion. Shortly after your arrival you will be invited by students of Symposion to join the first meeting of the academic year.
