Registration for courses and examinations

Students in the Faculty of Humanities are obliged to register for all study activities for which they are awarded an official mark.

Exam and Tutorial Registration and Study Results

Use uSis to register for lectures, tutorials, tests, papers, essays and presentations. Registration is obligatory for all compulsory components as well as for study activities taken as part of the optional programme (minor or modular courses). You do not need to register for the bachelor and master's theses, as these are registered through the student administration.

Registering for courses

Registration on uSis is compulsory for all courses in philosophy (both lecures and tutorial). Please register in time, and check if you are registered correctly! Students that are not registered for a course, will not be allowed to sit the final exams for that course.

Semester 1
It is possible to register for a course on uSis from 3 months before the beginning of the course up to and including the Thursday before the week in which the course starts. An exception has been made for the courses of the first semester: you can register for these courses until the end of September.

Semester 2
It is possible to register for a course on uSis from the middle of November, and no later than the Thursday before the week in which course begins.

After this date it is no longer possible to register on uSis. Students that are too late for registration for courses will need the lecturer's permission to register through the student administration. Then they must register for a course by sending an e-mail to the student administration of the Institute for Philosophy (y.van.eijk@phil.leidenuniv.nl), specifying their name, student number, and the title and code of the course.

Deregistration
It is possible to deregister for a course up to 14 days after the course has started. After this date students can deregister by sending an e-mail to the student administration, specifying their name, student number, and title and code of the course.

Registration for examinations and resits

For each course, examinations are offered twice per academic year. Be aware that only students that have taken part in the first opportunity are not allowed to register for the second one. Only students registered for an exam are allowed to sit for that exam. If you have not registered for an examination, you will not be awarded an examination mark. It is therefore important that you register in time.

Students must register for exams and resits on uSis. It is possible to register for an exam from 8 weeks before the date of the exam up to 5 working days before the date of the examination. After that date it will no longer possible to register yourself on uSis.

When the assessment takes place by means of a final paper or take home exam, students must register for the examination on the day they hand in their paper to the instructor.

Late registration for an examination

If you have missed the deadline for registration for an examination or resit, you can register at the student administration of the Institute for Philosophy (VRIESH4.104a) upon payment of € 20.

Withdrawing from an examination

You can withdraw from an examination on uSis until three working days before the examination.

However, to be allowed to take a re-sit, you need to take the first opportunity to sit an examination (for further information, see below).

Personal identification

It is crucial that you bring your student identification card as well as personal identification (valid passport, driving licence or identity card) to the examination. Your ID may be checked.

Admission to resits

Students are not always allowed to resit an examination. The following restrictions apply to the final course mark (not to midterm tests):

  • Students must take the first opportunity to sit an examination. If they have not, they will not be allowed to take the second opportunity to sit an examination. If you cannot take the original exam due to illness, or if you are unable to attend for family reasons, et cetera, please make sure you report this beforehand. to the student advisor. This can be done via email, stating your name and student ID. If you are absent from your exam without cancellation, you forfeit your rights to retake the exam in this academic year. If you are absent with a legitimate reason, the teacher and examining committee can reconsider your rights to take a resit.
  • Students are not allowed to resit examinations that they have passed (article 4.1.6. Course and Examination Regulations). This means that students who have completed a course with a pass cannot resit course components that they have failed.
