Biography & Research
Markus is a post-doc research fellow who joined the department as a member of the project "Morality beyond illusions: re-assessing the philosophical implications of empirical studies of moral agency" (2009-2013), which is funded by the NWO and lead by Prof. Pauline Kleingeld. He did a Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews with a thesis on "The metaphysics of agency" (2002-2006) and was a post-doc researcher at the department of Philosophy at Bristol (UK) with an individual research project on "Normativity and the causal theory of action" (2007-2009).
His current research is devoted to a sub-section of the NWO programme, which concerns the implications of empirical results from neuroscience and psychology for philosophical theories of free will and moral responsibility. In his research, Markus will focus on the role of the notion of mental causation in conceptions of free will and on the prospects for a compatibilist analysis of the ability to do otherwise.
