Research
In his research, Professor Mertens focuses on the relation between morality and the law, primarily from a Kantian perspective both in its systematic aspect, as well as in its applied; for example, how relevant is the Kantian perspective to the problems of today’s world and in what ways does it inform us about recent debates such as on human rights and responsibilities, on global governance, and on cosmopolitanism. He is also interested, historically, in the relation between morality and the law in so-called wicked legal systems, e.g. Nazism, and, as a result, in questions of transitional justice. Finally, he works on the questions of war and peace and seeks to determine our global responsibilities in this regard.
