Research
My academic interests are in Kant’s and Kantian philosophy, as well as in moral theory, political philosophy, and feminist theory. I am the author of Fortschritt und Vernunft: Zur Geschichtsphilosophie Kants (Würzburg: Königshausen und Neumann, 1995) and the editor of Immanuel Kant, ‘Toward Perpetual Peace’ and Other Writings on Politics, Peace, and History (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2006). I have published articles in Philosophy and Public Affairs, Philosophical Quarterly, European Journal of Philosophy, Kant-Studien, Journal of the History of Philosophy, and many other journals. In my work on Kant, I focus on the role of the idea of historical progress in his thought and on his notion of reason, especially his view of practical rationality and the relationship between theoretical and practical reason. I am currently finishing a book on cosmopolitanism and patriotism in late 18th-century German thought. I am heading the NWO-funded research programme", "Morality beyond illusions: Re-assessing the philosophical implications of empirical studies of moral agency" (2009-2013).
