Exploring New Vistas in the Historiography of Science

On Tuesday, 8 June the last contribution (at least in this semester) to the colloquium series Exploring New Vistas in the Historiography of Science will be given by a most distinguished historian of science, prof. dr. Klaas  van Berkel (University of Groningen). He will share experiences of many years working as a historian and present the view on the discipline he developed over these years.

'Shaking off Dijksterhuis's legacy. The Beeckman-dissertation revisited'

In 1983 Klaas van Berkel defended his thesis on Isaac Beeckman (1588-1637) and the mechanization of the world picture. At the end of 2010 a new and revised edition of this disseration will be published by Johns Hopkins University Press. In his presentation prof. Van Berkel will discuss how his views on the history of science have changed in the intervening years and how this is reflected in the Beeckman book. What is it that we are writing the history of?

Afterwards all participants are invited to have drinks at the Faculty Club.
