The Neo-Latin Tradition in the Netherlands
- Coordinator
- General
- This research group studies the developments of Neo-Latin text-types and genres in the Netherlands in the period ca. 1475-1650, with regard to the ancient tradition and ancient rhetorical theory.
Research concentrates on various fields in which recent and ongoing research has proven extremely fruitful: the Neo-Latin (auto)biography, poetry and poetics, epistolography, Ciceronianism and Erasmus.
The texts that are object of research are approached from two perspectives:
-
They are disclosed and made accessible to scholars by means of editions and commentaries: this is the basis of further research;
-
They are studied from a more theoretical perspective, using methods developed in literary theory and the study of Renaissance (auto)biography.
The latter field of studies has attracted much attention over the past decades, but Neo-Latin texts have often been excluded. Since Latin texts from the period were especially influential, it is necessary to straighten the balance. The research group collaborates with the Dutch ‘Neolatinistenverband’ and the Flemish Society for the study of Humanism and the Neo-Latin tradition (‘Orbis Neolatinus’).
