PhD Curriculum

Teaching and Coaching Plan
For every student admitted to the OIKOS PhD programme, a Teaching and Coaching Plan (‘Opleidings- en Begeleidingsplan’ or OBP) is laid down in writing. The OBP is established in collaboration with the student’s supervisor and the university department where he/she is admitted. It records the courses to be followed by the student; both teaching provided by OIKOS and teaching provided by the student’s own department are specified. Teaching provided by other research schools, and courses followed abroad may also be recorded in the OBP. In addition, if required by the institution where the student is admitted, teaching to be given by the student can be specified. PhD students are required to report annually on their progress.
OIKOS-curriculum
The OIKOS curriculum comprises approximately 420 hours, and consists of the following courses:
  • Course on (a) methodology and techniques, and (b) historiography and theory of the discipline, in which the status quaestionis of the various sub-disciplines and specialisations is discussed.
  • Text in context : two multi-disciplinary courses on the interpretation of a specific text read in advance by the participants.
The text may be discussed with special reference to: linguistics (diction, idiom, discourse analysis), stylistics, narratology, theory of genre, history of ideas, history of mentality, literary sociology, historical context, transmission, constitution of the text, etc.
  • One or two masterclasses, conducted by a distinguished (foreign) scholar, comprising an introduction and a seminar in which the participants present a paper prepared in advance.
Masterclasses are open to fourth-year graduate students, on a voluntary basis. Only one presentation is required.
  • One or two paper sessions, in which PhD students report on their own research and receive feedback from each other and from senior researchers.
  • Tutorials. Coaching in subjects relevant to a student’s dissertation that is not provided by the supervisor or the supervisory committee. Required tutorials are recorded in the student’s OBP.
Activities organised by research groups
In addition to the curriculum, the OIKOS  organise activities in which both senior researchers and graduate students participate. Such activities are regarded as an important aspect of the student’s training.
