During the NISIS course 'Traveling through Islam research in the Netherlands' research masters students and PhD-candidates will learn about the historical development of Islamic Studies in the Netherlands and the expertise, methods and disciplines involved in studying Islam at the NISIS-universities in the Netherlands. Deadline for application/registration is 18 January 2016.

Description of the course

The NISIS Course ‘Traveling through Islam research in the Netherlands’ consists of an introductory lecture which gives a historical overview of the development of Islamic Studies in the Netherlands. In this lecture, a theoretical framework for the study of Islam in the Netherlands will be presented.

After this introduction, the students will visit the departments of three different universities participating in NISIS. During three meetings the NISIS board members or his/her replacement will introduce the expertise, methods and disciplines involved in studying Islam at their university. At the end of the semester a closing session will be held in which the participating PhD candidates and research master students present their view on research on Islam in the Netherlands in relation to the topic of their own research.

These 5 meetings will take place between February – May 2016, a provisional schedule can be found in the course description below.

PhD candidates and research master students active in the field of Islamic Studies may apply for admission and should contact NISIS via nisis@hum.leidenuniv.nl

- letter of motivation
- a short description of your research project (300 words max.)
- CV

NISIS junior members automatically qualify for participation. However, they are required to register for the NISIS course via nisis@hum.leidenuniv.nl

Deadline for application/registration is Monday 18 January 2016. Please note this course requires a minimum of 7 participants in order to proceed. In case this minimum is not reached, unfortunately the course will be cancelled. Applicants will be informed a.s.a.p. after the application deadline has passed.
