This research is a historical linguistic study on the phonological feature of two classical Sino-Tibetan languages, Tangut and Tibetan, through the examination of 27 Tangut fragments in which Tangut characters are transcribed phonologically in Tibetan writing. The research will first give a complete collation to all these fragments. Then it will utilize the information of Tibetan transcription to re-examine the existing reconstruction scheme of Tangut phonology. Finally it will investigate the phonological feature of Tibetan during the 12th century by comparing the transcriptions of Tangut characters in Tibetan and those in other languages. The research will not only provide the most detailed manual on the Tibetan transcription of Tangut characters, but also advocate the understanding of Tangut, as well as the historical phonological change of Tibetan.
