The LUCL website
Information about getting items published on the LUCL website or a university-based page.
Personal data
Each LUCL member and PhD student will be listed in the People section of the LUCL website. The proper page will have an entry containing each person’s name, a picture and a link to their ‘personal page’. For this purpose, you can have your photo taken. The staff of the LUCL Office will be able to tell you who to contact.
On your personal page, you can list any work-related information you wish. Unfortunately, you cannot update the information on this page yourself. You can send this information to the same person who takes your picture. He or she will see to it that it is included on your personal page. Contact the LUCL Office for more details.
Additionally, you will be listed in the university-wide directory (zoekenopnaam.leidenuniv.nl). You can change some of the data listed here yourself through uPrefs. The remaining data can be changed through the human resources department.
Publishing information on the LUCL website
Introduction
If you have information about an upcoming conference or workshop, about a presentation or other news you would like to share or make available to the outside world, there are a number of possibilities publish your information or get your information published.
There are a number of options to publish your information on a university-based address, which will be explained below.
LUCL website proper
An event, series of events or project description can be included on the LUCL website. The information you provide will be put online by the staff of the LUCL Office.
If you want the text to be available directly on the website itself, we kindly ask you to provide the information using one of the provided templates. The format of this template is based on the information structure that Tridion imposes on the editor. Also, it is aimed at helping the staff of the LUCL Office to put your information online as swiftly as possible. The following templates are available:
- Talk or presentation
- Research project description
- Conference or workshop: Call for Papers, programme
- Dissertation
If you would like to stick to your own text structure, you can send the document as it should be put online to the LUCL Office (preferably in PDF format). This document will then be included on a page which will have a short general text introducing it.
Disadvantages of using the LUCL website proper are its relative rigidity and your dependence on others to get your information published. If you want to have direct control over the information, please consider one of the following options, especially when you will need to update the information frequently and/or over a longer period of time.
Weblog
Especially for series of events – such as reading and discussion groups – a weblog may be a good option. Everyone with a ULCN account – the account you also use to logon to Blackboard or the digital facilities of the University Library – has access to the University’s weblog system.
Using this system, it is relatively simple to setup and maintain a weblog. You have full control over the weblog’s contents. Other authors can be added to a weblog, providing that they have their own ULCN account.
Examples of LUCL weblogs are The Codifiers and the English Language and the PhD discussion group weblog.
Blackboard
Classes and courses can be supported through Blackboard, accessible to anyone with a ULCN account.
Tridion website
If you would like to setup an extensive website using the familiar layout of University webpages, it is possible to maintain your own website using Tridion, the content management system used by Leiden University. Be aware that Tridion has a number of quirks and is not the easiest system to learn. Therefore, investing the time to learn how to work with Tridion will only pay off if you will need to update the website often and over a longer period of time.
Examples of projects with a Tridion website are Stylistics of Dutch and The Codifiers and the English Language.
More information about this option is available from Rob Goedemans or Marieke Oe.
Links on the LUCL website
It goes without saying that LUCL is happy to link to all relevant webpages and websites. If you choose not to publish information about a research project, conference, presentation or talk on the LUCL website itself, please send a link to the staff of the LUCL Office.
