My current research focusses on Indo-European etymology, historical phonology and morphology, and the relationship between the various branches of Proto-Indo-European. Most of my publications concern Balto-Slavic, especially Slavic, but I have also published about the Indo-European proto-language and other branches of Indo-European such as Tocarian and Greek. Since 2005, I have been one of the authors of the new Etymological dictionary of Proto-Indo-European which will be published by Brill publishers. I am also co-author of the new Croatian Etymological Dictionary, the first volume of which (A-Nj) will appear in 2015. My work on the latter dictionary allows me to combine my interest in comparative linguistics with that in South Slavic dialectology, about which I have published a number of articles and a monograph.
In 2015 I will teach courses on, amongst others, historical linguistics, Indo-European morphology, Lithuanian and Old Church Slavic. Courses I have taught in the past include courses on Indo-European phonology, Balto-Slavic accentology, Tocharian and Slovene.
I studied Slavic languages and literature (MA 2002) and Comparative Indo-European linguistics (MA 2004) at Leiden University, where I also defended my dissertation "The Slovene dialect of Potschach in the Gailtal, Austria" (PhD 2009). I have been employed at Leiden University from 2003 till 2009 to do research into South Slavic dialectology and Indo-European etymology and to teach courses at undergraduate and graduate level at the Slavic and Indo-European departments. From 2010 till 2014 I was a researcher at the department for etymology and onomastics of the Institute of Croatian language and linguistics as one of the authors of the Croatian Etymological Dictionary. During this period I taught courses at the Universities of Zagreb, Zadar and the doctoral programme of the University of Rijeka. For a number of years I have taught courses at the Leiden Summer School in Languages and Linguistics.
