- Born in Northern Ireland, studied Irish and German at Trinity College Dublin, and German language and literature at several German universities.
Degrees held: Ph.D. in Linguistics in 1993 from the University of Cologne, Germany, with a thesis on a moribund language of Uganda, “The So Language”, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Sasse. B.A. (Hons) and M.A. from Trinity College Dublin in German and Irish.
Besides general linguistics, I have work experience in African linguistics, clinical neurolinguistics, and Amerindian linguistics. I have been working on the Amerindian languages of the Guianas (Cariban and Arawakan) since 1996.
