Research

My main fields of research are 'foreign language acquisition' and 'cultural identity'. I have written several books on Dutch as a foreign language (language testing, vocabulary acquisition, acquisition of pronunciation, early bilingualism, child language acquisition) and a number of articles on 'language and cultural identity' and 'art and cultural identity'. My major book is about the cultural identity of the language and the art of Flanders and the Netherlands from the 15th tot the 21st century. In Leiden I am responsible for the course 'language and cultural identity' and 'art and cultural identity' in the Department of Dutch Studies. At this moment I am involved in two major research projects, one on art and cultural identity and one on 'identity formation in a multicultural and multilingual environment'. In 2005, I was awarded the title of Honorary European Senator for my contribution to cultural understanding in Europe.
