LUCL Profileringsgebied

As announced in our December issue of the Newsletter, LUCL has been nominated as Profileringsgebied of Leiden University. The profileringsgebied is called Language Diversity in the world , see . Co-ordinators are Lisa Cheng, Alexander Lubotsky and Maarten Mous. Just before Christmas we were very pleased to receive positive news from the College van Bestuur: LUCL will receive funds (€ 1mln approx for the coming four years). We are still waiting for guidelines from the CvB on how to use these funds, so more details will follow soon.

We would like to welcome:

Antoinette Schapper - will start as a Postdoc researcher on the EuroBABEL project of Marian Klamer, see: http://www.hum.leiden.edu/lucl/research/research-projects/alor-pantar-languages.html . Antoinette is from Australia and will arrive in Leiden on 12 January 2010. Her office will be 1165-301a.

Sven Klippel and Thijs Porck will take over Marion Elenbaas' courses at the English department during the second semester, as Marion has started on her VENI project as of 1 January.

Christian Rapold - will start on 1 January as a Postdoc researcher on the EuroBABEL project of Maarten Mous The Kalahari Basin area: a ‘Sprachbund’ on the verge of extinction, see: http://www.esf.org/activities/eurocores/running-programmes/eurobabel/projects/list-of-projects.html#c35551 and http://www.leidenuniv.nl/nieuws/babelonische-spraakontwarring-090526.html. Christian got his PhD in Leiden and is still around regularly, so most of you will know him already.

Ninke Stukker - will start on 1 February as a Postdoc on Arie Verhagen's NWO project Stylistics of Dutch, see: http://www.hum.leiden.edu/lucl/research/research-projects/stylistics-of-dutch.html. Ninke will have her office in 1167-106b.

Andres Saab - has been selected for the vacant position of UD at TCLA. Andres has been in Leiden for the past semester as guest teacher, so most of you will know him already. Unfortunately, he is not able to start until August 2010, so during this second semester the courses will be taught by Bram de Saeger.

We wish all of you a lot of success in your new position!

Guests

Edwin Reesink will be a visiting teacher at LUCL (TCIA, with Willem Adelaar). Edwin is from Salvador, Brazil and will teach an MA-course on the antropology of Indians in Brazil in January.

Lilie Roosman is a visiting Postdoc researcher at the Phonetics Lab from 1 December to 1 April 2010, to work with Vincent van Heuven on her KNAW-SPIN postdoc project.

Andrey Shatskov will be a visiting PhD student in January-February at the VIET department. He has been here before, so please welcome him again.

JNM - Journalistiek en Nieuwe Media

As of 1 January LUCL will include the opleiding JNM (it used to be part of ICD/Pallas). We welcome the following staff, apart from Jaap de Jong, who’s been in our Institute from the start:

METIS - DEADLINE 15 JANUARY 2010

LUCL urgently requests you to complete your publication list in Personal Metis. The deadline for the university's and faculty's annual report is 15 January 2010. So please make sure your publications are registered in Metis. For more information, see: or contact the Metis Helpdesk at Metis@hum.leidenuniv.nl.

In view of the fact that in 2010 LUCL ‘s research will be evaluated by an international committee, it is absolutely vital that we have our publications records up to date!

15 March: NWO deadline for filing PhD grant applications (Call Promoties Geesteswetenschappen)
30 March: NWO deadline for filing VICI grant applications

18 January: LUCL deadline for VIDI drafts (for Faculty's Wetenschapscommissie)
15 February: LUCL deadline for filing PhD grant applications for the Call Promoties Geesteswetenschappen

The Faculty's Wetenschapscommissie will also meet on 15 February and 8 March and is prepared to look at all kind of grant applications (ERC, NWO Vrije Competitie, etc), so if you're interested, please contact Gea Hakker.

ResMA and MA news

We are pleased to announce that Martijn Kager (Opleiding Nederlandse Taal en Cultuur) has been awarded the Nederlandse Taalunie Scriptieprijs for his scriptie on 'The retoriek van kunnen'.
