Teaching and Research

Since September 2013 I have been working as an assistant professor (UD) at the Film and Literary Studies Department in Leiden.  My teaching covers a wide range of topics in the overlapping fields of comparative literature, film studies, adaptation studies and art history. I am committed to both the Intercultural and the Intermediality track within the Film and Literary Studies curriculum. I for instance teach courses on political and intercultural cinema (Third Cinema and Beyond)), on intermedial relations between cinema and literature (Literatuur en Film), and on the word-image conundrum (Paragone).

My main fields of expertise are (new) media theory, film and video, cultural theory and comparative literature. My research particularly focuses on the intermedial relations between lens-based media, as well as relations between media, spectators, and society at large. In my research on the relation between film and video, I argue that the meanings and effects of moving images in contemporary society van be grasped more fully when combinations of film and video elements within moving image objects are taken into account.  The starting point of my investigation into intermedial interactions between film and video is the concept of medium specificity, which I incorporate in my research in a non-essentialist manner.
