October 3rd is a local holiday in Leiden: the ‘Leids Ontzet’. For this reason, the university buildings are closed and there will be no lectures. This is also in effect for International Studies in The Hague.

The Dr. P.A. Tiele Foundation awards the thesis prize to the best graduate thesis in the field of book history. It is the objective of the Dr. P.A. Tiele Foundation to promote the study of the book in the Netherlands. This is done by installing professorships, enabling and publishing research and organizing symposia, congresses and lectures, and since 2007, by awarding remarkable theses.

On February 5th it’s Sweater Day. This means the University will lower the temperature in the lecture halls in the Lipsius and Huizinga building for one day to help reduce CO2-emissions. Don’t forget to bring a warm sweater to make sure you won’t be cold! In the week of February 8th, the University will announce the gains of this year’s Sweater Day.
26-year old Literary Studies (research) student Bas Kleijweg has won the Youth Peace Initiative Essay Award for his essay on Israeli prime minister Netanyahu. In his essay, Kleijweg steps into the immaculate shoes of Netanyahu, formulating a solution to the Israëli-Palestinian conflict from his perspective.
