Curriculum Vitae

Léon Buskens (Belfeld, 1962) studied cultural anthropology at the University of Nijmegen, where he graduated in 1987. Following up his interest in Islamic Law, he did extensive fieldwork in Morocco. In 1993 he obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Leiden with a dissertation on Islamic law, as codified in the Mudawwana, and family relations in Morocco.

In 1991 he was appointed to the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Islamic Middle East and to the Faculty of Law of Leiden University. He teaches courses on Islamic law, anthropology of the Middle East, and Islam in general. In 1998 he obtained a private chair for Islamic Law at Utrecht University, where he now teaches courses on Islamic Law in addition to his Leiden courses. His research areas are Islamic and customary law, with an emphasis on Morocco, and anthropology of the Islamic world. His current research concerns the history and present condition of the institution of professional witnesses ('udûl) and their formularies (kutub al-wathâ'iq) in Morocco, the relationship between Islamic law and local customs, and the genesis of the modern legal system of Morocco from the nineteenth century onwards. He is also interested in the history of the Western study of Islamic law.
