Fields of interest

My fields of interest include (Ottoman) Turkish history and culture, and Islamic art and material culture. My research specialization lies in Ottoman Turkish art and material culture, in particular tile culture and 18th-century architecture and architectural decoration. My current research project focuses on 18th-century Ottoman Turkish tile culture and studies Dutch tiles in an Ottoman Turkish context and developments  in contemporary local tile production in relation to socio-political and cultural developments. The research combines fieldwork, and (art) historical analysis of both architecture, artifacts and texts and tries to contribute to a better understanding of the 18th-century Ottoman cultural environment.
