V-Cinema: Film Production for the Video Market in Japan
Supervisors: Ivo Smits (LIAS) and Peter Verstraten (ICD)

Result of Japan's bubble economy of the 80s and 90s, the V-cinema industry consisted of traditional film studios desperate to survive a dramatic downturn in audience attendance figures and fly-by-night production outfits that often served as fronts for organized crime. Between 1989 and the early 2000s, this industry churned out more than a hundred films a year, all cheaply and quickly produced and mostly destined for video release, bypassing the theatrical circuit. Despite the opportunistic nature of V-cinema production, it formed a training ground for many young filmmakers that have since gone on to become leading film directors and regulars at international festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Venice. In this way, these filmmakers were a major influence in the shaping of Japanese cinema's image around the world.
