Xinrong’s current Ph.D research focuses on the brokerage and collective actions of Chinese internal migrants, in particular ethnic Yi labor migrants. Based on seven-months of ethnographic fieldwork of ethnic Yi communities in cities, she found that ethnic Yi brokerage system is formed in the process of migration and it is maintained in their workplaces. At the same time, ethnic Yi migrants organize collective actions on the base of the brokerage system. While investigating the mechanism of migration brokerage, her research further explores what ethnicity means to migrant workers’ collective actions in contemporary China.
Prior to her arrival at LIAS, Xinrong studied public administration in Nanjing University of Science and Technology (BA), political philosophy in Xiamen University (MA), and worked in the Department of Political Science in Leiden University. She was a visiting scholar of COMPAS of Oxford University in the Michaelmas Term of 2014.
Her broader research interest includes migration, identity, labor, race and ethnic politics, social movement, and local Chinese Politics.
