The source as object: the role of the clay tablet in the Hittite empire

This research will examine the role of the clay tablet in the information management of the Hittite Empire. The main focus will be on the clay tablet itself. The relations between the physical features, the text genre and the find spots of clay tablets will be investigated. The research will also include a lexical study regarding the different terms for writing, reading, and the various writing materials, as well as the terms for administrative handling procedures with tablets (e.g. sending, destroying, storing/retrieving of tablets). Furthermore, the research aims to reconstruct the archival practises based on archaeological en textual evidence (colophons, labels, shelf lists). The methods and theories of modern archival science will be applied in order to gain a better understanding of the Hittite record management.
