Background

Dr. Welmoet Boender (1974) is Lecturer Islam and staff member of the Leiden Islam Outreach Programme (LIOP). She has graduated in Cultural Anthropology (1997) and in Islamic Studies (1998) at Leiden University.

From 2011 to 2015 she has been Assistant Professor in Islamic Studies at Utrecht University. Prior to that position she was senior researcher at Oikos Foundation (Utrecht) (www.stichtingoikos.nl), manning the Knowledge Centre Religion and Development (www.religion-and-development.nl). 

Between 2006 and 2005 she was a Ph.D. fellow at the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM). In November 2007 she received her Ph.D. in Religious Studies at Leiden University. Her dissertation (in Dutch) is called “Imam in the Netherlands. Views about his religious role in society” (Amsterdam: Bert Bakker). Promotor was Prof. Dr. P.S. van Koningsveld.

Welmoet Boender is senior member of the Netherlands Interuniversity School for Islamic Studies (NISIS) and an affiliated member of the Erlangen Centre for Islam and Law in Europe (EZIRE) (ezire.uni-erlangen.de). She is member of the independent think tank of the Protestant Church Netherlands (PKN) on Muslim-Christian relations. She holds a formal Teaching Qualification (BKO).

Teaching, consultancy, day-chair, research, media contributions

Welmoet Boender regularly leads expert meetings and workshops. She contributes to public debate in the media and in panel discussions.
