course description

Dutch 1 is a course for beginners.

This course deals with the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Particular attention is given to basic grammar and everyday language use. Texts and topics are centered around everyday situations. The student learns approximately 650 new words. Conversation skills are practised in the class, as well as in groups, and language lab equipment is used. Students are expected to prepare for lessons at home; preparation time is estimated at 2 hours per session.

Upon completing the course, you will be able to hold a basic conversation about everyday subjects, such as where you live, where you are from, and family matters. Participants will also be able to read notices and basic texts.

The pace of learning is fast, and students are expected to actively participate in, and to prepare for the lessons. A basic knowledge of English and Roman script is required.

The target level is A1 in accordance with the Common European Framework.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants may enrol in Dutch 2.
