Course Description

During the first 6 tutorials of this course students will be introduced to academic writing. They will learn to use the correct grammar and style in their texts. In addition, they will learn how to use dictionaries and thesauruses with the help of an electronic Toolbox in Blackboard. They will learn to structure their thoughts in paragraph formatting. They will also learn to write introduction, discussion and conclusion sections of academic essays. They will learn to express themselves in a cohesive, coherent and logical way. Students will be made familiar with collocation, punctuation and word formation. They will be made aware of the dangers of plagiarism. At the end of the course students will have written an essay in their own field of study. This essay will be the basis for a presentation they will deliver during the second part of the course.

During the remainging 6 sessions students are introduced to academic presenting in English. They will study and train various aspects of giving academic presentations. They will learn to structure and signpost their presentations and will train to deal with questions. They will learn all the strategies needed to enhance their fluency and confidence in presenting in English. Furthermore, some specific difficulties in pronunciation will be dealt with.

Students should be aware that at least 2 to 3 hours per week should be spent on assignments.

Target group and admission requirements

This course is aimed at students who wish to do the Master's degree but who have not yet attained the required level C1 for English.

Students are required to take an entrance test to see if their knowledge is sufficient. You can simply complete the online placement test at home. When you are in doubt, contact us: 071 - 5272332 / talencentrum@hum.leidenuniv.nl

If you wish, you may also take the test at the reception desk of the Academic Language Centre on working days between 9:00 and 15:30 o'clock. It is not necessary to make an appointment.
