English
The Academic Language Centre provides a wide range of English courses. The courses differ with regard to level, content and frequency.
General Language Courses
These courses deal with all language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary are discussed thoroughly. The courses are practical and are aimed at making use of the language.
Please note: English 4 and 5 will also be offered as a semi-intensive course in January, June and July: 4 weeks, 3 sessions per week.

Academic English
For students
These courses are aimed at students who wish to improve their English for Academic Purposes. There are courses for bachelor student who wish to do a master's programme at Leiden University and who have not yet attained the required C1 level for English, as well as courses for master's student who wish to improve their academic skills in writing and presenting in English.
Students who are planning to do a part of their study abroad and need to take a TOEFL® test can take the TOEFL® Exam Preparation course.

For academics and scientists
The Language Centre provides a wide range of courses aimed at Leiden University lecturers. Courses are also open to scientists/academics from outside the Universtiy.

Business English
The practical Business English (Vantage) course is designed to help prepare people who need to work in an increasingly international environment, where English is more important than ever. Business issues such as phone calls, letters, emails and applying for a job are taught and trained. The course also reviews the most important grammar points and addresses speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
Legal English
The Academic Language Centre offers several courses aimed at improving English proficiency in a legal context.

Test
If you don't know which level is best for you, you can do our online entrance test. Once you complete the test we will recommend an appropriate course based on your results.
Self Tuition
There are additional listening exercises available on the computers in the self-tuition room. The accompanying reader costs € 10 and is available at the reception. The exercises are at level B2 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, comparable to English 4.
