English

General Language Courses

These courses deal with all language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary are discussed thoroughly. The courses are practical and are aimed at making use of the language. At each level two different courses are on offer, which can be taken consecutively and in random order.


Academic English

The Academic Language Centre offers several courses aimed at the use of English in an academic context. There are separate courses for students and members of staff.


Basic Qualification in English Language Skills

University lecturers who are in the process of obtaining the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) and who teach programmes in English will also need the Basic Qualification in English Language Skills certificate, which guarantees a basic standard of English.


EAP- Presenting for master's students

The EAP courses are aimed at students who wish to improve their English for Academic Purposes. There are courses for bachelor's students who wish to do a master's programme at Leiden University and who have not yet attained the required C1 level for English, as well as courses for master's students who wish to improve their academic skills in writing and presenting in English.   


English for Academic Purposes -Writing

This course is aimed at students who wish to improve their academic skills in writing. The topics that will be addressed include register, structure, clarity, coherence and cohesion, and the use of MLA and APA style and referencing.


English 2

English 2 is a course for advanced beginners. Participants acquire an elementary knowledge of the language. The focus lies on practical everyday language use. The exit level is A2 (Common European Framework).


English 3

English is a course for intermediate learners. Participants can use this course to extend their elementary knowledge of the language. The focus lies on practical everyday language use. The exit level is B1 (Common European Framework).


English 4

This course is intended for highly educated adults, both students and staff members of Leiden University, as well as interested parties with no affiliation with Leiden University.


English intensive 4

This intensive level 4 course is only offered in July. It consists of 15 sessions of 3 hours in three weeks. Due to the intensive nature of the course, participants are as it were immersed in the target language and are able to make great progress in a short period of time.


English 5

This course is intended for highly educated adults, both students and staff members of Leiden University, as well as interested parties with no affiliation with Leiden University.


English 5 intensive summer course

This is a practical rather than a theoretical language course which aims to involve learners’ thoughts, opinions and knowledge as they are practising. To this end, you will frequently work in pairs and groups, and there will also be a lot of student-teacher interaction in open-class discussions, as well as other fluency tasks.
