Opening hours/accessibility/restaurant

What are the opening hours of the Academic Language Centre (ATC) secretariat?
The secretariat is open from Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 17.00. We are closed on public holidays.  

Can I park in the vicinity of the Academic Language Centre (ATC)?
You can park (paid parking) in the following parking lots:
- Haagwegterrein
- Rijn en Schiekade
- Leiden University parking lot

How can I get to the Academic Language Centre (ATC) from Leiden Central Station?
Walking: approximately 10 minutes, see map.
By public transport: with the bus in the direction of Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk (Heineken), Paterstraat stop.
 
My course is scheduled around dinner time. Is there a canteen in the building?
There is a restaurant on the ground floor of the Lipsius building.
There are also various restaurants and cafés in the vicinity of the Academic Language Centre (ATC).


Registration

How can I register for a course?
You can register online. On the course page, click on ‘course programme– lesson times– enrolment’. A new window will appear in which you can see the course schedule and how many places are still available. You can register by clicking on ‘registration/payment’.
For online registration, you can pay using iDEAL or a credit card.

If your course is sponsored by a company or institution, you can download the registration form for companies by clicking on ‘registration form for companies’.
 
When can I register?
For each course period there is a registration starting date. This date is specified alongside each course.

Until when can I register?
You can register until one week before the start of the course. At that moment, we decide whether a course can be held. This depends on the number of participants. When a course is fully booked, you can only register for the waiting list.

I would like to register now but I have not yet taken a test; can I register anyway?
You do not need to take an entry test if you register for a beginner’s course (Spanish 1, Dutch 1, etc.) or if you have successfully completed the previous level course. In all other cases you must first take an entry test, even if you have followed a similar course elsewhere.
 
Can I reserve a place?
It is not possible to reserve a place.
 
How can I see whether there are still places in the course I wish to register for?
On the website, click on the ‘registration for individuals’ line alongside the relevant course. In the next window you can see how many places are still available.
 
I am following a course at the moment; can I register for the follow-up course before I take the final test?
If you are currently following a course, you can register for the follow-up course. If you fail the final test of the previous course and are forced as a result to cancel your registration, you will be reimbursed the course fee of the follow-up course.
 
I did not yet pass the test for the previous course; can I register for the next one?

If you are currently following a course, you can register for the follow-up course. If you fail the final test of the previous course and are forced as a result to cancel your registration, you will be reimbursed the course fee of the follow-up course.

I failed the test; can I nevertheless register for the next level?
Yes, if you take a resit before the beginning of the next course. If you do not pass the resit, you can cancel the course at no further cost.

Can I be placed on a waiting list if the course is already full?
If a course is fully booked you can be placed on a waiting list. If there is a cancellation and you are the first person on the waiting list, we will contact you.
 
Can I register for a course in the next semester?
You can register from the start of enrolment onwards. The dates can be found on our website, alongside each course.

Courses (course materials, group size)

When are the next courses being offered?
- Dutch courses start three times a year: in September, January and April.
- Foreign language courses (Arabic, Chinese, English, Spanish, etc.) start twice a year: in September and January/February. 

- In May/June we offer several semi-intensive courses for foreign languages.

What is the maximum number of participants in a course?
- For the Dutch courses the maximum number of participants is 16 (except for the Dutch Plus courses and the training for the State Examination).
- For the foreign language courses the maximum number of participants is 18 (except for some Academic English courses).
 
How many people must register for a course to go through?
On average, 12 people must register for a course to go through. Approximately one week before the start of a course we decide whether the course will take place. Participants who have registered for the course will be informed by e-mail.
 
Where can I find out which books to purchase?
Information about the course materials for each course can be found on the website and in the second confirmation e-mail.
 
Where can I buy the course materials?
In every good bookstore. In Leiden, this means on the Breestraat, at Van Stockum, Selexyz Kooyker or De Kler. Van Stockum offers 5% discount to Academic Language Centre students.
 
How do I know which room the course takes place in?
Once you are registered for a course you will receive a definitive confirmation e-mail one week before the start of the course (this will be the second confirmation e-mail you receive). It will contain the name of your tutor, the course materials and the number of the room where the first lesson takes place.

A list with starting dates and an overview of the classrooms will be put up at the secretary's office.

Who is the course tutor?

Are there vacations during the course period?
The Academic Language Centre (ATC) follows as closely as possible the school vacations of the Leiden region. The vacations are specified on the website alongside each course.

Payment

How can I pay?
You can pay using iDEAL or by credit card (Visa and MasterCard).
 
When do I pay?
You have to pay when registering.
 
Can I pay in monthly instalments?
It is not possible to pay in monthly instalments.
 
My course is sponsored by a company/institution/town council. How should I fill in the form?

The enrolment form should contain the payment details of the relevant institution/company/town council. The form should also be signed by the contact person of the relevant institution/company/town council. A bill can then be sent to the relevant institution/company/town council.
 
Who is eligible for the reduced rate?
-  Leiden University students (on presentation of a valid student ID or a conditional letter of admission from the Admissions Office of Leiden University).
- Leiden University staff members. If your details cannot be found on the University website, you must provide proof that you are a member of Leiden University staff.

Cancellation

I registered for a course, but I no longer wish to participate. How can I cancel my registration and will this cost me money?
You can only cancel your registration in writing: by letter or e-mail. If you cancel up to 7 days before the start of the course, the cancellation costs are € 40,-. If you cancel within 6 days before the start of the course, the cancellation costs are 50% of the course fee. If you cancel on the starting date or after the course has started, the course fee will not be reimbursed.
 
I registered, but I am unable to participate. Can I give my place to someone else?
It is not possible to transfer your place to someone else.
 
I started a course, but I wish to stop. Can I get my money back?

Once a course has started, no course fee will be reimbursed.
 
Can I transfer my registration to the next course period?
It is not possible to transfer your registration to a following course period. You will have to register again for the next course.

Can the Academic Language Centre cancel a course?
The Academic Language Centre reserves the right to cancel courses before the starting date. In cases where the Language Centre cancels a course, the whole course fee will be reimbursed.

Final test/certificate

When is the final test?
The final test usually takes place during the last lesson. The tutor can tell you during the course when the final test will take place.
 
I passed the course; when will I receive my certificate?
The Academic Language Centre (ATC) aims to announce the results of the final tests as soon as possible. You will receive your certificate in any case within four weeks after the end of the course.
