Requirements
Requirements for starting International Studies are a Dutch VWO-diploma or equivalent and proficiency in English.
English proficiency requirements
It is essential that you start your studies in the International Studies programme with a good level of written and spoken English, as the programme is taught in English, and you will have to do all your studying and writing in English. When you apply, you therefore have to include proof of your proficiency in English. You do not need to provide proof of your level of proficiency if you:
- (will) have completed your education in Canada, the USA, the UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia;
- (will) have obtained an International Baccalaureate;
- (will) have completed successfully the Dutch VWO.
If the above does not apply to you, you will have to provide other proof of proficiency, using one of the tests below. You have to arrange the test yourself. Leiden University accepts three kinds of official tests:
-
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Academic modules only. Minimum score of 6.0 for bachelor’s programmes; -
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Minimum score 550 (paper-based) / 213 (computer-based) / 79-80 (internetbased) for bachelor’s programmes. Original test results should be sent directly by the Educational Testing Service. The TOEFL institution code for Leiden University is 0504. Institutional Toefl tests are not accepted; -
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English.
Diploma requirements
You will be admitted to the Bachelor's programme in International Studies if you are in the possession of:
-
a VWO-diploma or equivalent with no further requirements of your subject cluster or
-
a first-year or final diploma from a higher professional (HBO) institution or
-
a first-year or final diploma from a university programme.
Dutch applicants with a VWO-diploma are automatically admitted to the BA-programme. An equivalent of a VWO-diploma can be a certificate that was obtained outside the Netherlands, an International Baccalaureate (IB) or a European Baccalaureate (EB). Leiden University's Admissions Office had published some examples of certificates equivalent to the Dutch VWO. Please note that these are only some examples. If your diploma is not on this list, this does not automatically mean that your diploma is not valid. Please apply via our online application system so the university's Admissions Office can review if your certificate meets the requirements.
Online Application System
Admission to the International Studies programme for non-Dutch students and/or students with a diploma other than VWO, is organised by Leiden University’s Admissions Office. You can apply online through the Leiden University's Online Application System. If you are a VWO-student you can apply directly via the Studielink-website.
