Curriculum Vitae
Initially, Prof. Meadow pursued a practical musical education (his instrument was the oboe, with the emphasis on the Baroque and the recorder) at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, the Schola Cantorum in Basle and the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio, USA.
He started his career within music as a freelance performer of chamber music, and he published facsimile baroque music. He also followed a study of the History of Art: a BA programme followed by an MA in History of Art at the University of California in Berkeley. At this same university, Meadow obtained his dissertation in 1994 on Pieter Bruegel, Pieter Aertsen and the Practice of Rhetoric in the Sixteenth-Century Lowlands. At Berkeley, he was promoted from teaching assistant to assistant professor to associate professor. He held these last two positions within the Department of History of Art and Architecture.
On 1 January 2006, he was appointed Professor in the History of Art and Material Culture in the Early-Modern Period.
Publications
Meadows publishes on a wide variety of subjects. His special interest is in Pieter Bruegel, Late-Medieval proverbs and the Kunst and Wunderkammer, the precursors to the collections of museums currently displayed in their private collections.
