Research Master Study of Art and Literature

As a Graduate School of the Faculty of Humanities the LUICD is responsible for the Research Master Study of Art and Literature. Within the Research Master there are two tracks possible: Art History and Literature.

Programme

PROGRAMME, TRACK LITERATURE

First semester
All students take the course in ‘Approaches to Literature’, which provides an overview of literary theories from classical antiquity until present day. In addition, students take two elective courses:
* one elective course is an interdisciplinary Research master course from their period of specialization (Medieval/Early Modern Studies or Modern/Contemporary Studies)
* one elective course (research seminar) is from the discipline of specialization, f.i. English, German, Dutch, Literature, TCLA, Italian, Frenc etc.
It is possible to change one of the elective courses for the Research master course ‘Interculturality I’.

Second semester
This semester consists of the course jointly followed by both tracks of the Research master’s Study of Art and Literature ‘Methodological Concepts in Art and Literature’, which builds on the first-semester course on Approaches to literature. In addition, students take two elective courses:
* one elective course is an interdisciplinary Research master course from their period of specialization (Medieval/Early Modern Studies or Modern/Contemporary Studies)
* one elective course (research seminar) is from the discipline of specialization, f.i. English, German, Dutch, Literature, Latin-America studies, Italian, Frenc etc.
It is possible to change one of the elective courses for the Research master course ‘Interculturality II’.

Third semester
Students who enter the programme in 2010-2011 will in 2011-2012 follow a Colloquium (5 ects) and a Thesis seminar (5 ec).
Then they take one elective (10 ec) from their period of specialization (Early Modern studies or Modern/Contemp. studies) and one elective MA course from the discipline of specialization (10 ec).
Or they can follow a special study abroad program/ internship (20 ec).

Fourth semester
Students who enter the programme in 2010-2011 will have a continuation of the thesis seminar (5 ec) and write their thesis (25 ec) under the supervision of an academic member of staff. 


PROGRAMME, TRACK ART HISTORY
This Research Master’s programme offers six specialisations, four centred around four professorships of Art History, and two affiliated fields of expertise, reflecting the research interests of the staff:
– History and Theory of Modern and Contemporary Art
– Art and Visual Culture of the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period
– History and Theory of Architecture
– History of Decorative Arts, Industrial Design and the Domestic Interior

Affiliated fields of expertise:
– History and Theory of Collections
– History of Art and Material Culture of East Asia & South and Southeast Asia.

First semester
All students take the course in ‘Practices and debates in Art History’, which addresses current methodological issues in art history. In addition, students take two elective courses:
* one elective course is an interdisciplinary Research master course from their period of specialization (Medieval/Early Modern Studies or Modern/Contemporary Studies)
* one elective course (research seminar) is from the discipline of specialization, f.i. History and Theory of Modern and Contemporary Art, Art and Visual Culture of the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period, History and Theory of Architecture etc.
It is possible to change one of the elective courses for the Research master course ‘Interculturality I’.

Compulsory for all students is the course Methodological Concepts in Art and Literature. In addition, students take two elective courses:
* one elective course is an interdisciplinary Research master course from their period of specialization (Medieval/Early Modern Studies or Modern/Contemporary Studies)
* one elective course (research seminar) is from the discipline of specialization, f.i.  History and Theory of Modern and Contemporary Art, Art and Visual Culture of the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period, History and Theory of Architecture, etc.

Graduation procedure

Graduation procedure:

  • After the draft version of the thesis is submitted to the supervisor (first reader), the candidate and the first reader agree on the date by which the candidate will receive the first reader's assessment of and comments on the draft version (maximum 3 weeks after draft version was handed in).
  • If the thesis is assessed as satisfactory (voldoende, mark 6 or higher), the candidate will have the opportunity to make final revisions. A copy of the definitive thesis is then sent to both the first and the second reader at least two weeks before the oral defense. The two readers and the candidate set a date for the oral defense.
  • In order to graduate during or at the end of the academic year, students fill out the 'Application Master Exam' form and deliver it to the secretary's office. At the same time you make an appointment for your graduation date.
The exam procedure can start if

- all marks have been awarded and registered by the secretary's office of SAL (Doelensteeg 16) five weeks before graduation date. 
- the final mark for the thesis has been handed in three weeks at the utmost before the end of the month you want to in. So if you want your diploma to be dated on 31 August your mark must be handed in on the 10th August;
- the mark of your thesis is handed in via the signed 'Statement - Thesis research master' . Three weeks before the graduation date the Office of SAL must be in the possession of:
  
- The list of registered marks, signed by the student (secr. and student) 
- Statement - Thesis research master' (student) 
- Copy of the passport (student)
- a pdf. of your thesis
  • The secretary will have the exam registered at the Pedel's Office, which will produce the diploma. 
     
  • If the oral defense takes place before the end of August, the actual date will be put on the diploma; if not, 31 August will be used as the exam date on the diploma. 
     
  • A digital copy of the thesis has to be handed in at the secretary's office at secrkg@hum.leidenuniv.nl.  (Please note there is a format for the title page.)
  • The student will receive an invitation for the diploma award ceremony.
