Esther Zwinkels obtained her BA and MA degree in History at Leiden University. In 2009 she graduated with distinction on a thesis on Indies resistance against the Japanese occupying power on Sumatra during the Pacific War. The thesis was awarded the Fruin Prize 2009 and the Erik Hazelhoff Aanmoedigingsprijs 2010 and has recently been published at Spectrum. During her study Zwinkels was editor of the scientific historical journal Leidschrift and worked as a research assistant at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) on a project on colonial migration.
She is currently working on a NWO-funded research project entitled: Recognition and retribution. Transitional justice in the Netherlands Indies after the Second World War. This project concerns the legal and moral questions which the Dutch government faced after the Japanese capitulation.
It focuses on how the Dutch and Netherlands Indies government dealt with the different types of conduct (ranging from committing war crimes to conducting acts of resistance), in order to re-establish its power in Indonesia. This is done by analysing the investigations on and prosecution of war criminals and collaborators on the one hand and the decoration of 'heroes' on the other.
The research project is supervised by Prof. dr. H.W. van den Doel and Dr. J.Th. Lindblad.
