Henk Wesseling, born in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1937. Ph.D. from Leiden University. Professor of Contemporary History at Leiden University from 1973 to 2002. Rector of NIAS (Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study) from 1995 to 2002.

Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences

(Amsterdam), the Academia Europaea (London), the Académie des Sciences d'Outre-Mer (Paris), the Académie Royale des Sciences d'Outre-Mer (Brussels). Deputy Editor, European Review, London.

Visiting Fellow at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, VIe Section (now: E.H.E.S.S.), Paris, 1971/72. Visiting Fellow, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (N.J.), 1980/81. NIAS Fellow, 1983/84.
