Research

Out of interest for both military and Spanish history I am researching social and racial aspects of the participation of Moorish (Moroccan) troops in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The Question is, how far did the Spanish Nationalist military authorities allow (or not) these Moors to interact with the different elements and aspects of a new European cultural surrounding, for example: relations with Spanish women, the relation with the Catholic religion. This I do based on primary research in Spanish archives as well as interviews with surviving Moroccan veterans of that conflict. In this endeavor I am assisted and supervised by both Prof. Dr. Henk te Velde and Dr. Eric Storm.
