Curriculum vitae

Roitman studied Religion at Maryville College (magna cum laude), received an MA in Latin American Studies from Vanderbilt University (magna cum laude), and a PhD in History from the University of Leiden in 2009 with a dissertation on inter-cultural trade and the Sephardim in early 17th century Amsterdam. She was a fellow at the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and the recipient of a NWO-funded Rubicon post-doctoral fellowship to do a comparative study of the reception of immigrant Jews in 18th century London and Amsterdam at Birkbeck College, University of London. She has published on Atlantic colonial trade, migration, identity, and inter-cultural interactions.

Research interests

Her research interests include: the role of state-sponsored institutions for conflict resolution within Jewish communities, the link between ethnicity, criminality, and social mobility, economic failure, transnationality and identity, and the dynamics of immigrant reception.
