- In the year 2000 Laura (Sittard, 1982) started her academic career at the Radboud University Nijmegen, where she did two studies, American Studies (graduated 2004, cum laude), and English Language and Culture (graduated 2005, cum laude). In 2003 she spent a semester at the African-American Studies Department at the University of California, Berkeley. Here she lay the foundations for her master thesis for American Studies called "Martin Luther King, Jr. & the SCLC and Robert Moses & SNCC: Two Faces of the Civil Rights Movement's Struggle, 1957-1965," which won the Theodore Roosevelt American History Award 2005. After completing a teacher training course (eerstegraads lerarenopleiding) she taught several courses for the English/American Studies Department of the Radboud University Nijmegen in the academic year 2006-2007, including "Introduction to American Studies," "Academic Writing," "Oral Communication Skills," and "Grammar, Writing, and Translation."

- Since September 2007 Laura has been working on her PhD project at the Leiden University, which again focuses on the Civil Rights Movement, and in particular on the role of Robert Moses's leadership in the production of social change during 1960-1965.
