Fields of interest
Social and economic history, demography, roman republic, legal sources, epigraphy Aristocratische en democratische gelijkheid in de Griekse wereld. Thucydides’ overtuiging dat politici hun doeleinden op rationele wijze dienen na te streven in combinatie met zijn besef dat irrationele drijfveren altijd een rol zullen spelen. Een hoogontwikkelde beschaving met een onderontwikkelde economische basis. Demografische ontwikkelingen en de perceptie daarvan door tijdgenoten. Sociale mobiliteit en de representatie daarvan door belanghebbenden. Het vermogen van de Romeinse jusristen om zoveel in zo weinig woorden te zeggen. Raadselachtige inscripties. Rome, de grootste stad in de Europese geschiedenis vóór ca. 1800. De gemeenschappelijke problemen van pre-industriële rijken. De flexibiliteit waarmee in de Oudheid Griekse, Romeinse en andere identiteiten werden gecombineerd.
Professor de Ligt is project leader of the vici-project Peasants, citizens and soldiers: the effects of demographic growth in Roman Republican Italy (202-88 B.C.)
