Curriculum vitae
Donald Haks studied history at Leiden University. He obtained his PhD in 1982 on a dissertation on family history (‘Marriage and the family in Holland in the 17th and 18th centuries’). From 1992 to 2010 he was director of the Institute of  Netherlands History in The Hague. From 2010 onwards he is Lecturer at Leiden University.
Fields of interest
The social and cultural history of the Dutch Republic, especially family history, news and public opinion and autobiographical writing (diaries and autobiographies).
Work in progress
My research concerns the public communication (manifestos, newspapers, pamphlets, sermons, prints etc.) regarding the wars the Dutch Republic waged against France between 1672 and 1713. What kind of information was available, was there something like a public opinion, what was the message? And what does this all reveal about the attitude of ‘the Dutch’ with respect to the wars against Louis XIV and which meaning these wars were given?
