Fields of interest

Authoritarian consolidation and non-democratic regimes; opposition politics, popular protest and democratisation; Belarusian government and politics; international relations of Russia and Eurasia.


I completed my doctoral research on the contemporary politics of Belarus, which I am currently converting into a research monograph.

Teaching activities

I teach a range of courses on Russian and Eurasian politics and international relations at both the Leiden main campus and in The Hague.

Curriculum vitae

I was appointed an Assistant Professor at Leiden University in 2013. Before that I taught at the University of Birmingham and Aston University in the UK, after completing my PhD in 2011 at the Centre for Russian and East European Studies in Birmingham. I have also been also been deployed as an international election observer for OSCE/ODIHR in Ukraine and Belarus.

I have contributed to policy discussions and briefings on Belarusian politics at a number of UK governmental bodies, international organisations and think tanks. I have presented numerous papers at academic conferences in the UK, Europe and North America.

I have extensive in-country experience and knowledge of the region, having lived, worked and studied in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus on many occasions since the mid-1990s. My language skills include advanced Russian and a good comprehension of Belarusian and Ukrainian.
