Theology

Language of Instruction: Dutch

The Leiden study of Theology is a broad, classical-academic programme. During the propedeuse (first year) you are introduced to the research fields of the six sections: Old Testament, New Testament, History of Christianity, History of religion, and Comparative Religious Studies, Philosophy/Ethics of Religion and Social Sciences. The study of primary sources and literature plays a central role. Command of classical and modern languages is essential. Learning Hebrew occupies one-third of the first year.

The bachelor's degree programme

After the first year the six courses are further studied in depth. During the last part of the bachelor's programme and in the master's programme you can choose your own subjects. You will receive a great deal of support in developing your specialization. The broad academic spectrum of Leiden University is at your service: Chinese Taoism or the religions of Africa can be learned just as easily as the transmittance of the Old or the New Testament, ethical questions, the social role of religion, interpretational questions from diverse social sectors or the archaeology of the ancient Near East.

Practical Studies

Following the basic programme, the Theology programme can be combined with one of the 'practical studies' or PraktijkStudies (International Management & Culture, European Union Studies, Journalism and the New Media, Book and Publishing or the Educational minor) or with other options and, possibly, an internship.
