Philosophy

Bachelor’s Programme
Language of Instruction: Dutch

Philosophy is one of the most important carriers of our cultural heritage. The study differs from other fields because it confronts the foundations of reality and knowledge. What is truth? Are human beings free spirits? Is our perception of the world different from what it truly is? Such questions make the study of philosophy an intellectual challenge.

The programme demands a high degree of patience and independence: you have to be extremely well motivated to actually finish this programme successfully. This investment yields a high output of insights and skills. The Leiden study of philosophy encompasses all the classical subjects of this scholarship. Characteristic for Leiden is the way in which the systematic philosophy is interwoven with the history of philosophy. The programme's teaching is noticeably fed by the research of its staff. Due to the programme being small-scale, students and lecturers are able to work together closely and knowledge and experience can very easily be exchanged.
