Juan Parra gives lecture in Maastricht
Every month 'Intro in Situ' in Maastricht organises a lecture about sound art and music in collaboration with docARTES. The first lecture will be given by Juan Parra Cancino and deals with the role of the artist in electronic music.

Wat kan een performer nog toevoegen aan computergestuurde elektronische muziek: is er nog wel een artiest nodig bij muziek die foutloos geprogrammeerd (en dus gespeeld) kan worden? De computer als muziekinstrument: wat zijn haar mogelijkheden en grenzen?
Tijdens deze presentatie zal het huidige onderzoek van Cancino centraal staan: volgens hem zijn twee belangrijke onderdelen van elektronische muziek het genereren van een timbre en het manipuleren hiervan. Compositie, het ‘bouwen’ van instrumenten en de performance zelf zijn sleutelbegrippen: het timbre brengt niet alleen composities voort, maar ook (ideeën voor) muziekinstrumenten en een performancetechniek die hierbij past. De fragiliteit, verrassing en onverwachtheid van een muziekperformance probeert hij terug te brengen naar de elektronische computergestuurde muziek. Cancino zal zijn uiteenzetting kracht bijzetten met praktijkvoorbeelden: een organische documentatie van een reis die verschillende projecten heeft behelsd en hem uiteindelijk tot dit punt heeft gebracht.
What is the role of the performer in electronic music? What can he/she contribute to a music practice that holds the ability to be “infinitely” precise? Can the computer function within the cultural/social and logistical constrains of a ‘traditional’ musical instrument? What are its possibilities, and what are its limitations?
This presentation will showcase the results of Cancino’s ongoing practice-based research on the area of performance practice of computer music, focusing on the influence of the multiple roles that this practice demands: Composition, Instrument building and Performance. By focusing on the importance of the generation of timbre and its manipulation over time as the salient elements in electronic music, and dealing with these two elements as the driving force to generate not only compositions but also musical instruments and inherent performance technique, he aims to create an original result in terms of flexibility and coherence that would contribute to the development of electronic music by recovering, for both practitioners and audience, the fragility, surprise and unexpectedness that presenting music on stage is all about.
This presentation will include practical implementations in the form of musical and notation examples, presenting an organic documentation of the journey of the elaboration of the different projects, as well as a proposal of a method for the creation, interpretation and diffusion of computer music in a concert situation.
KVSwalk
Op deze avond wordt speciale aandacht gegeven aan de KVSwalk, een project van het Orpheus instituut. Het concept "belichaming van de muziek" (embodied musicality) wordt hier als beginpunt genomen voor de ontwikkeling van een compositie met meerdere lagen. De mogelijkheden en grenzen van de belichaming van de computergestuurde muziek worden uitgebreid onderzocht.
Special attention will be given to ‘KVSwalk’, a project conducted within the framework of the Orpheus Research Center in Music and centered on the use of several meanings of the concept of embodiment as starting point for the development of a multilayered composition that aimed to research the possibilities and limitations of physicality and embodied musicality in computer music performance.
Juan Parra
Juan Parra Cancino studeerde compositie aan de Katholieke Universiteit van Chili en Sonologie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Hij is oprichter en lid van The Electronic Hammer, een computer- en percussiemuziek ensemble gewijd aan de creatie en promotie van nieuwe muziek en Wiregriot.
Op het moment is Parra PhD-kandidaat aan de Universiteit van Leiden en het Orpheus Instituut en focust hij zich op performances in de computermuziek.
Juan Parra studied Composition in the Catholic University of Chile and Sonology at The Royal Conservatory of The Hague (NL). As a guitarist he was part of several ensembles related to Guitar Craft, a school founded by Robert Fripp. He collaborates regularly with artists like Frances Marie Uitti, Richard Craig, KLANG and Insomnio Ensemble.
Parra is founder and active member of The Electronic Hammer, a Computer and Percussion Music Ensemble devoted to the creation and promotion of new music and Wiregriot, a voice and electronics duo that seeks to reconstruct the repertoire for this format. He is currently a PhD candidate of the Leiden University(NL) and the Orpheus Institute (BE) focused on performance practice in Computer Music.
